You shouldn’t believe everything you hear about flooring. Quite frankly some people will tell misleading information to sway your purchase one way or the other, and other times people you speak to don’t always offer the right information.

In the flooring business, there are many inaccuracies, perceptions and preconceived ideas people have about certain flooring styles – and about carpet in particular. To set the record straight, the team of carpet flooring fanatics here at Floorz on the Gold Coast separate the flooring facts from the flooring fables in our latest blog post.

1.“Carpet is harder to maintain than other floors”

Compared to other flooring methods, carpet requires a similar level of maintenance to tiles and hardwood floors. Carpet only requires weekly vacuuming and steam cleaning every 12-18 months. Of course you don’t have to follow this maintenance schedule, but by doing so you will extend the life of your flooring.  With easy to hire carpet cleaning machines, and the cost of professional carpet cleaning as little as 30 dollars per room, the cost of carpet cleaning is less than stripping, cleaning, mopping  and buffing hard floor surfaces and far less laborious.

2.    “Carpet causes increased allergies in the home”

While carpets have been known to store allergens including dust and pollen, because they are trapped in the carpet fibres, there is actually less allergens in carpet than other flooring types where allergens can circulate more freely. Read more about how the findings of a study into carpets actually reduced airborne allergens compared to other flooring styles.

3.    “New carpet is full of volatile organic compounds”

Compared to other building materials, carpets actually emit fewer VOC’s than most other indoor furnishings including hard floor adhesives, wall paper and floor polish.  The manufacture of all new carpets must meet strict VOC requirements, and there are even low emitting products available.

Other flooring myths:

“Anyone can install flooring” – Not the case. Flooring installation is a highly technical craft. From the correct measurements, to getting surface correctly prepared prior to installation, there is a lot of potential to go wrong when laying carpet or laying floorboard and vinyl sheets if you don’t know what you are doing.

“Mould growth is more common on carpets than other floors”

Mould can grow anywhere there is moisture, no matter the surface. This idea probably stems from the fact that moisture may be harder to see in carpets compared to other floors, but there is no truth to the claim that carpets produce more mould than other floors.

So there you have it, some of the biggest myths when it comes to carpets and flooring are unfounded.
